Types of complications
These are simplified descriptions of some complications that may arise with IBD
Anal Fissure
Small tear in the tissue that lines the anus. Is associated with painful bowel movements. |
Toxic Megacolon
The colon rapidly widens and swells |
Perforated Colon
A hole in the colon. Often caused by Toxic Megacolon, but may occur on its own. |
Primary sclerosing cholangitis
Inflammation causes scarring within the bile duct, which can cause liver damage. |
Blood Clots
Increased risk of blood clots in veins and arteries. |
Bowel Obstruction
Parts of the bowel can thicken and narrow, blocking the flow of digestive contents. |
Malnutrition
It becomes difficult to absorb nutrients throught eh large intestine. It is also common to develop anemia from low iron of Vitamin B12. |
Ulcers
Open sores (ulcers) can occur anywhere in the digestive tract. |
Fistulas
Ulcers which extend through the intestinal wall. Causes an abnormal connection between different parts of the body. Common in perianal area. |
Colon Cancer
Having IBD increases the risk. General screening for colon cancer in people without IBD occurs every 10 years at the age of 50. |
Skin, Eye, Joint inflammation
Arthritis, Skin lesions, and Uveitis may occur during flare ups. |
Medication Side Effects
Certain medications contain a small risk of developing certain types of cancers. Corticosteroids may be associated with osteoporosis and high blood pressure. |
