I am a twenty year old college student who was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease this past February 2020 after a long year of searching for answers. My first semester of college I tore my meniscus while playing soccer and had to have surgery. Once my leg healed, all of a sudden I became really ill. I lost a ton of weight without trying, couldn't hold food down, and had some other symptoms that were TMI. After being told by a local PCP in January 2019 that I probably had colon cancer, I saw a GI specialist who told me I had an "autoimmune disorder" and I never heard from them again. I didn't seek more help and just dealt with the fact that I was constantly sick, cancelling plans, and that life sucked for the first semester of my Sophomore year. In January 2020, I got a second opinion because I needed to get my hearth under control to help bring my grades up. The past year I had missed so much class, it showed in my GPA. That's where I found out I officially have Crohn's Disease. At 20 years old, I take 8 pills every morning, get routine blood work, stool samples, and colonoscopies... that just doesn't feel normal, but it's my new normal. For that entire year I struggled with giving up foods like gluten and processed sugar, being positive, and not feeling like my body was failing me. I still have my rough days, but the IBD community has taught me and supported me so much that I am actually thankful for Crohn's in a way. It has brought me some amazing friends from around the world that I know I can talk to about literally anything. (Nothing is TMI when talking to a fellow IBD patient.) To watch me try to navigate this new life, follow me on Instagram @trusting.my.gut I would love to connect with you and hear your story."
