4/19/2020 0 Comments Robert Schmidt, Crohn's DiseaseRobert shares his story on instagram @livingwithcrohnsdisease "Being diagnosed at such a young age (5) was tough. I never felt well enough to play sports or do things a normal kid would do. I am fortunate enough to have great parents that have helped guide me and made my heath their priority. Despite the struggles of growing up with a chronic illness, it has also had its benefits. It taught me how to deal with a lot of things at such a young age and made me the person I am today. Throughout my life I have been on many different medications (steroids, biologics, etc.), diets, and so on. If you name it, I've probably tried it. Many things have not worked at all. Other things would work for a few years and then would stop working. I also had surgery in May 2012 to get part of my intestine removed. Almost 4 years of college has really done a number on my health. My school and major are very challenging, and as much as I enjoyed college it has been an ongoing source of stress for me. Being that stress is one of my main Crohn's triggers, my condition has gotten worse over the years. A little over a year ago, I reached rock bottom and decided to start making some big lifestyle changes. I really focused on my diet, exercise, and reducing stress. More recently, I have been focusing on more natural medicine techniques such as acupuncture and yoga. Also, a few months ago I decided to start on the Simple Carbohydrate Diet. I have not been on medications since the end of December 2019, and I hope to keep it that way for awhile. I am still not were I would like to be in terms of my health but, nevertheless, my condition has improved dramatically from where I was just a little over a year ago. I am also in the process of starting my own website and potentially clothing company, to continue to share my story, connect with others who are going through similar things, and just give people hope to keep fighting."
