7/10/2022 0 Comments my experience with humiraI would like to begin this by saying that I am not a healthcare professional. I'm simply sharing my experience. Please consult your doctor whether this medication may be a good choice for you. While Humira did not work for me, I would like to share my experience with it. Humira (adalimuamab) is a biologic used to treat many different conditions including Ulcerative Colitis. In scientific terms, it is a TNF blocker reducing the effect of a substance in the body which is causing the inflammation. In my medication timeline, this is the second medication I tried after getting off prednisone, a steroid to reduce immediate inflammation. I was in fact very pleased with Humira. However, it only reduced my inflammation about 50%. The blood in my stool had disappeared but diarrhea still persisted. I knew this wasn't ideal in the long run. It's important to be on a medication that works for your body. Continuous inflammation can cause more harm if left untreated. Humira is a self-injectable pen taken every couple of weeks. My first dose, which was a greater dose, was given at the doctor's office to show me how to do it myself. The self-injection didn't scare me. I've never been afraid of needles, so this option wasn't difficult for me. After this visit, I would do the injections myself. My biggest advice for this would be to ice the area. I typically injected into my inner thigh. I would keep an ice pack on my thigh for at least 10 minutes beforehand to numb the area. Though sometimes the cold made the medication sting a little bit more, so you really can't get around the pain. Overall, I really enjoyed the experience and was on Humira for approximately 3 months. While this medication did not work for me, I would actually prefer this method over the infusions that I am receiving now. Logistically, the injections would be a better, less time-consuming option for me. I would like to have my current medication in the form of a self-injectable pen one day, I know scientists are trying to work on it. If you are considering Humira as a treatment option, I will now be talking about fact and side effects about the medication to give you a clearer point of view. However, always consult with your doctor. The following information can be found on HUMIRA® (adalimumab) | A Biologic Treatment Option Since Humira is a medication that blocks your immune system, this may make it harder for you to fight off infections. Thus, always tell your doctor your medical history to determine if the medication may interfere with other conditions. Humira can cause certain side effects. These include but are not limited to serious infections, Hepatitis B, allergic reactions, nervous system problems, Heart failure, immune reactions, liver problems, and Psoriasis. I hope you find this post helpful. I will be sharing experiences with other medications as well.
